Picture this: Christmas Day, your wife returns home with the kids after a visit to Grandma’s — to find you standing under her brand-new crystal chandelier. Just what she’s always wanted! You’re officially the hero of Christmas!
So here’s what you do. Get her out of the house for a few hours (it shouldn’t take more than 4 hours, but block out 5 to be safe), then get to work.
Before you do anything, make sure you turn off the electricity to the circuit you’re working on. The last thing anyone wants on Christmas is to be electrocuted.
Next, you’ll need to take down the old fixture; unscrew the canopy (the decorative bowl-shaped shade) and remove it completely.
Then, remove the electrical box. What tools you use will depend on whether it’s metal (you’ll need a regular screwdriver) or plastic (a slotted screwdriver).
Next, install the fan brace. Make sure it’s taut, but don’t overtighten it.
Then, prepare the new electrical box. Don’t use cable if there is no cable connector, or you risk damaging the wires. Bolt the box to the ceiling.
Next, connect the wires. Shorten them and remove any necessary chain links so the chandelier will hang at the right height.
Finally, secure the canopy, and voilà! Your new crystal chandelier is hung!
