There’s a very famous scene in the musical version of The Phantom of the Opera, which includes the smashing of a gigantic crystal chandelier. In the scene, the Paris Opera is performing Faust, with prima donna Carlotta in the lead role. The titular phantom is displeased by this — he demanded that his adored Christine be given the lead — as well as by the fact that his usual seat in Box Five of the opera house has not been reserved for him as per usual.
The Phantom takes away Carlotta’s voice and reveals himself to the crowd, seducing Christine onstage. She turns to him and pulls off his mask, to cries of fright and disgust from the crowd. Hurt and furious, the Phantom cuts the rope of the crystal chandelier and disappears beneath the stage with Christine. The chandelier gives out and crashes through the crowd before finally reaching the stage.
In the 2004 film version of Phantom, a miniature version of the chandelier was created, as a life-size version would have been too large to film and looked odd. The chandelier in the Broadway production is life-size, but smaller than what the film version is filmed to look like.
