If you find that you are losing interest in the decor of the room, take a minute to reflect on how you highlight its features. You may be amazed to find that the thing really causing the disconnect between elements is the lighting. You can find ways to spruce up the look of a room simply through the lighting.
Start by recognizing your home’s architectural design. Homes are built with certain era features. It may be tempting to go with standard current trends but it leaves you very little leeway in the long-term. You can correct this by selecting a lighting feature that augments the overall design. Traditional homes look beautiful with sconces and crystal chandeliers. A 1920s period house, for example, would most likely be best matched with brass or bronze vintage chandeliers and decorative lamps.
Also, be sure you account for height and furniture space. Larger crystal chandeliers are best placed in rooms with high or angled ceilings. It is recommended you leave around 30 inches from the bottom of your crystal chandelier and furniture, especially tables. That will leave enough room for a view without placing it too high.
Space the lighting. How much light does your room need? And how do you want to direct shadows? The crystal chandelier is only one fixture. Consider sconce, lamp, and candle placements. Balance points of light and dark so it doesn’t feel like an interrogation room.
Follow these basic guidelines and you’re sure to get the right lighting for your room.
